Special jury award: Let’s Encrypt
Jury rationale
Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA), run for the public’s benefit. The service gives people the digital certificates they need in order to enable HTTPS (SSL/TLS) for websites in a very user-friendly way.
Software running on a web server can interact with Let’s Encrypt to painlessly obtain a certificate, securely configure it for use, and automatically take care of renewal. Much like the underlying Internet protocols themselves, Let’s Encrypt is a joint effort to benefit the community, beyond the control of any single organization.
The JAX Innovation Awards jury believes that Let’s Encrypt greatly improved web security by making certificates freely and easily available to everyone. Let’s Encrypt’s existence is a call to the IT community to pay attention to security, and we urge everyone to heed it.
