Google Grant Hadoop MapReduce Patent Pardon

Jessica Thornsby

Following Google’s patenting of MapReduce, Google has granted a patent license to the Apache Hadoop and Apache MapReduce projects.

Apache Software Foundation’s Larry Rosen, contacted Google to ensure Hadoop was not infringing on this patent, as Hadoop’s MapReduce process is similar to Google’s patented version. Google’s reply has been posted at the Apache Mailing List. “ I am very pleased to reassure the Apache community about Google’s continued generosity and commitment to ASF and open source. Will someone here please inform the Apache Hadoop and Apache MapReduce projects that they need not worry about this patent,” reads the reply.

Apache Hadoop develops software for distributed computing, including Hadoop Common, Hive, and HBase.
