Android Market Server

Protect Your Android Apps with New Licensing Server

Jessica Thornsby

Licensing Your Applications: a new licensing server comes to the Android Market, as Google take steps to prevent app-copying.

A new licensing server for Android Market has arrived, in an effort to prevent the copying of Android apps.

Any requests you make to the new licensing server are signed with a public key, and the responses from the sever are signed with the private key. A License Verification Library (LVL) tool-set ships with the SDK, which provides entry points for querying the sever and handling results, and modules that can be used to implement some popular licensing policies. LVL also comes with a testing framework.

The licensing service should work with all versions of Android, all the way back to version 1.5.
