OpenSolaris Governing Board Votes on Future Under Oracle
The OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB) have posted a summary of a conference call held on Monday, July 12th 2010, to discuss the board’s official position. Jeb Dasteel, the Oracle Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer was invited, but did not take part in the conference.
The board discussed the future of the OGB, namely, whether they should wait for Oracle to make contact, take steps to revitalise the community without Oracle’s help, or disband the OGB and hand control and direction of the OpenSolaris Community back to Oracle.
The latter option was put to a vote, however, the motion was defeated, with Neale Ferguson, John Plocher and Peter Tribble voting against immediate disbandment. The OGB then voted for board meetings to be suspended until August 16, 2010, unless the board manage to arrange a meeting with Oracle before that date. If Oracle do not appoint a liaison by August 16, 2010, the board will meet on the 23rd August, and trigger the clause in the OGB charter where the board will disband and return control of the community to Oracle. This motion was passed.
