Mesos at Yelp – Building a production-ready PaaS

JAX Editorial Team
Yelp

In this talk, Rob Johnson, SRE at Yelp, explains how Yelp has built PaaSTA to meet goals such as to provide the “glue” to bring tools including Mesos, Marathon, and Chronos together without burdening developers with the complexity of such a multifaceted system.

In this talk, Rob Johnson gives an introduction to PaaSTA: an open source PaaS built on top of tools including Mesos, Marathon, and Chronos. PaaSTA provides tooling for developers to quickly turn their microservice into a monitored, highly available application spanning multiple datacenters. One of the key goals of PaaSTA is to provide the “glue” to bring these tools together without burdening developers with the complexity behind such a multifaceted system. Rob explores how Yelp has built PaaSTA to meet these goals. He covers a number of topics, including the use cases that PaaSTA was built to fulfill, the tools PaaSTA uses, and a discussion of the opinions Yelp has on how services should be deployed and what those opinions look like in PaaSTA.

Rob Johnson is an SRE at Yelp, spending most of his working time contributing to Yelp’s homegrown, open source platform-as-a-service, PaaSTA. Rob comes from a development background, having worked in the digital publishing and social media advertising industries, but has always had a deep interest in operations and backend systems. He now works on the Operations team in Yelp’s London office, having previously lived, worked and studied in Brighton, England.
