‘Apps For Healthy Kids’ Challenge
Lady Michelle Obama has launched a new ‘Apps for Healthy Kids’ campaign that challenges developers to come up with an app which encourages children and young adults to make healthier food choices and be more active.
Apps should be based on the USDA nutrition dataset recently released through the Open Government Initiative. Submissions may also use the Source Code and any other data sets provided at the Data.gov website. Submissions must be a software tool or game for the web, computer, mobile device, console, or other software platform generally available to the public.
“We are seeking innovative and creative tools and games that use the USDA dataset to deliver nutrition and health concepts in a fun and engaging way,” reads the Apps for Healthy website.
Submissions are now open, and will remain open until 5:00pm EDT June 30, 2010. The prizes will be split into two categories ‘Tool’ and ‘Game.’ The ultimate winner of each category, will receive a prize of $10,000. The runners up will receive $4,500.
Please see the Apps for Healthy Kids website for more information on rules, prizes and important competition deadlines.
