Oracle Pulls The Plug On Project Darkstar
After pulling the plug on Sun’s Project Wonderland, it has been announced that Sun’s open source application server for multiplayer online games, virtual worlds, and social networking applications, Project Darkstar, will no longer receive funding.
Project Darkstar is middleware written in Java aimed at helping developers create scalable persistent virtual worlds. The Project Darkstar infrastructure aimed to automatically handle resource allocation, transaction management, and task scheduling. Darkstar currently stands at version 0.9.11, although the source repositories and the website will be maintained for a while longer, with the community investigating other homes for the code and the supporting content.
Applications built on Project Darkstar included 3D action adventure game MilMo and 3D web-based MMORPG Leelh.
