15% Growth for Android

IDC Analyst Predicts Android to Become 2nd Biggest OS in 2011

It's been a good year for the smartphone industry! The Western European mobile phone market grew to 43.3 million units in the second quarter of 2010, and smartphone shipments increased by 60% on last year's second quarter. So what's behind this growth? According to IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo, it's largely down to the 15% market share achieved by Android in this quarter. He sees this 15% growth as evidence that Android "is ramping up to become the second biggest operating system as soon as early 2011." Jeronimo claims smartphone customers are recognising they can get a similar experience from Android, as from the iPhone, for a lower price tag. The popularity of HTC, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung have also helped raise awareness of Android.

The IDC report cites a 450% year on year increase of Android OS shipments, and a 11% increase in market share between the second quarter of 2009 and the second quarter of 2010. This makes Android the fourth biggest operating system amongst smartphones.
