Hewlett-Packard have announced that it will buy Pre smartphone makers Palm for $1.2 billion.

"Palm's innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP's mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices," said Todd Bradley, the vice president of HP.

The deal is expected to close by July.

HTC had previously been rumoured to be interested in taking over the company.
