Google Resolve WebM Licensing Disagreement

Jessica Thornsby

Following a disagreement over licensing, Simon Phipps has announced that Google’s WebM CODEC project will now be released under the open source BSD licence.

The copyright licence and patent grant language have been separated from each other, something Simon Phipps is particularly pleased with: “it offers the WebM source under the most liberal possible open source licence, allowing re-use in almost any context, while solving the one down-side of the BSD licence – the lack of a patent grant.”
