Co-Inventor of Dtrace Leaves Oracle

Jessica Thornsby

Bryan Cantrill praises Sun’s open approach as one of its “greatest strengths.”

The co-inventor of Dtrace, Bryan Cantrill has announced that he
is leaving Oracle.

At his blog, he praises Sun Microsystems’ open approach and –
perhaps – hints that he had a problem with Oracle’s more closed
approach and lack of interaction with certain elements of the
community. “One of Sun’s greatest strengths was that we
technologists were never discouraged from interacting directly and
candidly with our customers and users, and many of our most
important innovations came from these relationships,” he
writes.

He gives no indication of his plans, post-Oracle.
