Cloud, virtualisation top priorities for U.S. Federal IT
Federal IT workers have two things on their minds - cloud computing
and virtualisation management, reveals the fourth annual FOSE
government IT survey, administered by ScienceLogic.
The numbers were up across the board on virtualisation management,
with 86% stating it was important or very important, 32% with tools
in place and another 38% planning implementations this year.
That is up from 74%, 29% and 23% respectively last year, signifying
widespread acceptance as well as adoption for this trend that just
a few years ago was considered more hype than reality.
Cloud computing saw the largest increase in importance to federal
IT workers surveyed - with 58% rating it important or very
important, a jump of 17% from 2009.
But actual adoption remains fairly low (7%) but planned cloud
initiatives jumped from just 12% last year to 1 in 3 with cloud
initiatives planned for this year.
Private clouds are coming first, with 17% naming it on their list
of major IT initiatives this year versus 13% listing public cloud
plans.
"The shift to cloud computing is in process, and as the largest IT
buyer in the world, the federal government acts as a barometer for
just how massive it will be and how quickly the shift will occur,"
said ScienceLogic CEO David Link.
