3D API Shake-Up

Chromium To Develop O3D as a JavaScript Library

Jessica Thornsby

The Chromium team have announced they plan to stop developing O3D as a plugin.

The O3D API is a 3D graphics API for the browser. At the blog post, the Chromium team state that the community will be able to download the O3D plugin and source code for at least one year, and that a maintenance release is still in the works. However, they plan to continue their 3D efforts, focusing instead on improving the WebGL 3D graphics API based on OpenGL ES 2.0, and O3D as a JavaScript library, following perceived improvements in the speed of JavaScript.

An early edition of the JavaScript implementation of O3D, is available at O3D’s Google Code.
