Twitter API Changes

Basic Authentication To Be Dropped from Twitter API

Jessica Thornsby

Twitter will stop supporting basic authentication in the Twitter API by June 2010.

Authentication occurs when a Twitter client provides Twitter username and password information in order to obtain permission to access a Twitter account. The Twitter API will drop this process, in favour of the xAuth method, where clients are only required to send your password to Twitter once. After the initial authentication, Twitter will supply an access token, which the client will use instead of the password.

The switch-off will effect versions of TweetDeck for the desktop prior to 0.33, and all versions of the iPhone and iPad app. Desktop users must upgrade to version version 0.33 or higher, and iPhone and iPad users will be issued with an update.
