Apache Tomcat 5.5.35 released
The most popular Java EE server is back once again with another minor release, amending a few fixes as Tomcat 5.5 enters the end of its lifecycle.
The Tomcat developer team have chronicled 18 updates to the Servlet/JSP Container and details about some of the new add-ons are found in the release notes. They include an enhanced performance for parameter processing in GET and POST requests and the option has been added to limit the maximum number of parameters per processing request. Tomcat 5.5.35 now compiles to Eclipse 3.7 For further minor tweaks, the changelog has it all.
It's coming to the end of Apache Tomcat 5.5.x series with no updates scheduled after September 2012, with the download pages being removed in December. Tomcat maintains more than 50% of the Java EE server market, according to a recent survey that asked 1000 Java Enterprise companies so it seems logical to progress further with Tomcat 6.0 and 7.0 series to meet that demand.
It looks like Tomcat and other open source servers will continue to thrive, as adoption towards open source options flourishes
