The Apache Software Foundation have launched a new Community Development project site that aims to help newcomers integrate into the ASF community. The site is still in the early stages, but currently offers an introduction to the ASF mentoring programme and formal mentoring programme, and a newbie FAQ. Newcomers are also invited to subscribe to the ASF community mailing list.

    Just managing growth

The ASF still sees exponential growth in committers and projects. In the past, CRM (community relationsip management) was handled more loosly. Now, we have basically promoted the non-formal group of people handling Google Summer of Code and similar programmes to a committee, which is now managing community devlepment in general.
Today, in it\\\'s 10th year, the ASF still wants to give new contributors a chance to get up and running fast. Having a central place to visit is a big improvement.

    Formalising processes

Bernd is absolutely correct the community development effort is not about finding more recruits, rather it is about helping newcomers find their way in an increasingly large and busy foundation.

Don\\\\\\\'t believe us? Take a look at the committer stats:

The ASF can be a very hard and scary place to find your way around, especially if you are new to open source or your IT career. The Community Development project aims to help people find their way into the right projects.
